Start with the decision

Blind-box shelf capacity should be calculated from the usable shelf space and the packages that will actually occupy it. Outside cabinet dimensions, catalogue photographs and a general label such as “small box” are not enough. Separate the geometric quantity that can fit from the quantity the store intends to present and the load the fixture is verified to support.

Build a capacity sheet for each representative package format. Record usable dimensions, product orientation, the planned space assigned to each position and any areas reserved for labels or samples. The calculation is a planning check, not a load rating or a guarantee that customers can comfortably select every theoretically possible unit.

Measure the package in its selling orientation

Use the packaged unit that will be placed on the shelf. A loose sample, an individual sale box and an outer shipping carton are different objects. Confirm which one the calculation describes and keep that identity visible in the schedule.

Record width, depth and height in the intended display orientation. If the package can be presented in several ways, calculate each option separately and consider which face carries the information customers need. Do not rotate a box in the calculation merely to increase capacity without checking whether the resulting presentation makes sense.

Use a consistent measurement convention. The GS1 package measurement standard provides a formal approach to identifying package dimensions. A retailer can use that reference to support consistent records, while still confirming the actual orientation and dimensions relevant to its shelf presentation.

Obtain usable fixture dimensions

Ask the supplier for the space available to the merchandise, not only the cabinet's overall width and depth. Side panels, dividers, label holders, back components and other details can reduce or change the usable area. The relevant drawing should show the proposed configuration clearly.

Record each shelf condition separately when they differ. A lower shelf, an angled presentation or a shelf interrupted by another component may not have the same usable capacity as the others. Multiplying one convenient value by the total number of shelves can overstate the result.

Keep height clearance distinct from horizontal capacity. Boxes may fit across and along the shelf while the intended vertical arrangement remains unresolved. Product removal, information visibility and the actual shelf system must be reviewed with representative packages rather than inferred from a plan-only calculation.

Define the planned space per position

The package dimension is not necessarily the whole space assigned to one display position. The layout may reserve room for dividers, presentation gaps or the chosen selection method. Record how that space is allocated and avoid counting the same allowance twice.

One practical method is to define a position width and position depth that already include the planned allocation. Divide the usable shelf dimension by that position dimension and round down to a whole number. This is ordinary geometric planning, and the chosen allocation must still be tested against the actual presentation.

Do not treat an illustrative gap as a manufacturing tolerance or a universal clearance. The appropriate arrangement depends on the packaging, fixture details and operating task. The capacity sheet should state the assumption so the supplier and buyer can review it together.

Calculate front positions and depth separately

The number of front positions is the whole-number result of usable width divided by the planned width per position. The number of depth positions is calculated in the same way from usable depth and the planned depth per position. Multiplying them gives the geometric unit count for that shelf under those assumptions.

Keep these two values visible. Two shelves can hold the same total number of boxes while presenting different numbers of visible product faces. A store comparing assortment visibility needs to understand that difference instead of looking only at the total count.

If the products do not use a regular grid, divide the shelf into defined zones and calculate each zone separately. Do not apply one package size to a mixed arrangement unless it genuinely represents the planned allocation. The final total should be traceable to the actual zones shown on the drawing.

Work through a hypothetical calculation

Suppose a hypothetical shelf has a usable width of 960 mm and usable depth of 330 mm. The selected box is 110 mm wide and 100 mm deep in its intended orientation. For this illustration only, the planner allocates 120 mm of width and 110 mm of depth to each position, including the space reserved in the proposed presentation.

The width calculation gives eight positions because 960 divided by 120 equals eight. The depth calculation gives three positions because 330 divided by 110 equals three. The geometric capacity is therefore 24 boxes on that shelf. These numbers describe the example's assumed grid; they are not recommended dimensions or clearances for a real fixture.

If four shelves have exactly the same usable arrangement, the corresponding geometric total is 96 boxes. If one entire shelf is reserved for display samples and information, only three shelves remain in that saleable-stock calculation, giving 72 boxes. The sample shelf should be recorded separately rather than counted as available sale stock.

Before using either total, the team must review the actual products, selection operation, height conditions and verified fixture load information. A correct multiplication does not establish that the complete display is suitable or that the retailer should hold that amount of stock.

Use a capacity sheet that exposes deductions

The following table shows the information needed to make a capacity result reviewable. The project version should contain the actual values and drawing references.

Add the package and fixture revisions to the sheet. A capacity result should not be reused after a box format or shelf detail changes without checking the affected inputs. The calculation is only as current as the dimensions and assumptions it uses.

Test access after calculating fit

For a mixed shelf, make the zone calculation visible. Suppose the same hypothetical 960 mm usable width is divided into two equal 480 mm zones. One format uses a planned position width of 120 mm, producing four front positions. The other uses 160 mm, producing three front positions. If both zones have three verified geometric depth positions under their own assumptions, the total is 12 plus nine, or 21 boxes. It would be incorrect to apply the smaller format across the whole shelf and report 24.

Record any unused remainder and explain whether it is deliberately reserved or simply unavailable to the planned grid. Do not redistribute it into extra capacity without checking the actual arrangement. A transparent zone calculation lets the buyer see why changing the product mix can change capacity even when the shelf dimensions stay constant.

Place representative boxes in the proposed arrangement and review how customers select them. A theoretical grid can conceal difficulty identifying the rear stock or removing a package without disturbing neighbouring products. Record those observations separately from the arithmetic.

Test a partially depleted shelf as well as a fully stocked one. Staff need to know how the presentation will be restored and whether labels remain associated with the correct series. A capacity that depends on constant reorganisation may have a different operating cost from a lower-density arrangement.

Include the intended dividers, label holders and sample positions in the trial. Testing a bare shelf and adding those components later can invalidate the usable-space assumption. The capacity sheet and product trial should describe the same configuration.

Compare more depth with more visible faces

Increasing stock depth can raise the total unit count without increasing the number of products visible across the front. That may suit a particular replenishment strategy, but it may not solve a need to show more series. State the objective before comparing fixture options.

An arrangement with more front positions may communicate a wider assortment while holding fewer copies behind each one. The buyer should compare how that choice affects reserve stock and replenishment. Neither arrangement is automatically better; each supports a different presentation and operating relationship.

Do not use physical capacity as a demand forecast. Purchasing quantities should draw on the retailer's trading information and business assumptions. The shelf calculation answers how a defined arrangement fits, not how many boxes will sell.

Confirm loading through the actual fixture information

Obtain the relevant load and installation information for the proposed shelf system from the responsible supplier and technical reviewer. The package count alone does not establish total load suitability, and a rating for another shelf or configuration should not be transferred without confirmation.

Keep the technical confirmation linked to the actual arrangement, including any relevant distribution assumptions. If the store later replaces small boxes with heavier merchandise, the original capacity sheet is no longer a sufficient basis for use.

When enquiring about blind-box display cabinets, provide the measured package formats and the capacity sheet. This gives the supplier a clear basis for checking usable space and discussing a presentation that fits the store's actual merchandise and operating needs.
